Eileen Higdon

A citizen of Pickering, Ontario since 1979, Eileen has deep roots in the riding, and a long history of serving and defending its communities and natural spaces. Eileen describes herself as "driven to stand when I see something that needs change". She is excited to stand as Pickering-Uxbridge's MP, representing the NDP's platform of bold climate action, and a more just Canada, where the rich pay their fair share.

Eileen's record of environmental stewardship spans decades. In 1991, Eileen led a citizen coalition to stop the destruction of a waterfront wetland for a townhome development. This February, 30 years later, she stood with Environmental Action Now Ajax-Pickering, defending the Duffin's Creek wetland from a warehouse development. As a Pickering Councillor, Eileen led an effort with local young people to paint fish next to storm drains, educating citizens about the dangers of dumping pollutants. In frequent deputations to Pickering Council, she emphasizes the importance of sustainability, climate impact, and natural spaces, over the wants of developers and corporations. It is on these grounds that Eileen opposes a Pickering airport.

A retired nurse, Eileen understands the challenges faced by healthcare workers, and continues to support them at protests. Her passion to care for people extends beyond the workplace, in decades of volunteerism, helping refugees, seniors, and homeless people. She currently delivers food baskets for Durham Community Care. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic she has remained active in volunteer work, and standing up for causes she believes in. She has attended protests throughout the GTA for the environment, healthcare workers, and Indigenous rights.

Eileen Higdon cares deeply about Pickering-Uxbridge, Canada, and the planet, and she turns that care into action. She is determined now, to take that care to Parliament Hill, in support of Jagmeet Singh's vision for essential, transformative change.
